Choose the right trailer for your freight and save money for your business by learning about the different types of trailers based on load capacity and purpose. Trucks require trailers to carry the load. Trailers are the extra carrier vehicles you must have seen attached to the truck while driving on the highway. There are many types of trailers, each having a different load capacity and a different purpose.

THE VARIOUS TYPES OF TRAILERS ARE:

FLATBED TRAILERS

One of the most common types of trailers? The flatbed trailer. They are mostly used because of their high level of versatility. They can be used to carry anything from lumber to steel coils. The driver must be aware of how to tarp a flatbed, as this form of a trailer does not utilize a containing box.

FLATBED TRAILER DIMENSIONS
  • Usually, a flatbed trailer is 48-53 ft in length
  • Can be loaded from any direction (overhead crane, forklift side, forklift rear)
  • The standard dock height is 4 ft. off the ground
  • Loads often require tarps.

DRY VANS

Another type of trailer that is different from the rest? The dry van. Some may know this trailer type as an enclosed trailer. The dry van is one of the most used trailers for transporting cargo along the highway, as it keeps items safe from the elements as well as safe from the possibility of falling.

DRY VAN TRAILER DIMENSIONS:

Usually, a dry van trailer is 53ft in length, but in some cases, it can be 48ft.

  •    Can only be loaded and unloaded from the rear with a forklift
  •    Dock required for loading and unloading
  •    The deck van height is 4 ft. from the ground
  •    The maximum haul weight is 45,000lbs, but dry van carriers prefer to limit the weight to 43,000lbs

REFRIGERATED TRAILERS

The third type of trailer that is worth mentioning, the refrigerated trailer, is essentially a dry van that has been insulated and stocked with a cooling system so that items needing to be kept cold can be transported and kept fresh. This type of trailer is used to carry frozen food items as well as produce. The weight capacity is the same as a dry van.

REFRIGERATED TRAILER DIMENSIONS

Usually, a refrigerated trailer is 53ft in length, but in some cases, it can be 48ft.

  •    Can only be loaded and unloaded from the rear with a forklift
  •    Dock required for loading and unloading
  •    The deck van height is 4 ft. from the ground
  •    The maximum haul weight is 43,000lbs, but dry van carriers prefer to stick around up to 40,000

STEP DECK TRAILERS

The step deck trailer is a trailer that is very similar to the flatbed trailer, with the only difference being that the step deck max freight height is ten feet. This is a trailer that is designed to carry cargo that the flatbed trailer cannot. The reason why? You can essentially pack an additional two feet height-wise onto your trailer that the flatbed cannot allow.

STEP DECK TRAILER DIMENSIONS
  • The main (bottom) deck is usually 2.5-3 feet off the ground (vs standard 4ft on a flatbed)
  • The ‘step’, or top deck, is usually 4ft off the ground
  • The usual length is 53ft
  • Can only be loaded/unloaded from the top or side
  • Load levellers can be used to even out the lower deck with the top
  • Certain loads can’t be loaded onto step-decks even with load levellers

DOUBLE DROP TRAILER

This trailer is often used to haul industrial equipment like bulldozers. Because the deck is so low, the cargo can often be driven onto a lowboy trailer.

DOUBLE DROP TRAILER DIMENSIONS:
  •    Usually 28-29ft on the main deck
  •    The main deck (in the middle) is usually referred to as the ‘well’
  •    Can only be loaded from the top or side and cannot be loaded from the rear
  •    The best option for oversized freight over 10ft

These trailers are a great substitute if the cargo is unusually tall. The step deck trailer can still be loaded from any side except now it can accommodate a cargo height of around 10′.
